Baby & Child by Restoration Hardware, Los Angeles

When Restoration Hardware introduced its Gallery concept there were many critics who thought it a bridge too far. In the face of the recession back in 2009, its stripped back and distressed ‘austerity chic’ design changed the way we saw home furniture forever.

Restoration Hardware even raised prices and aimed at a much more style savvy customer. The result was that it left the likes of West Elm looking decidedly ordinary; a sort of poor man’s contemporary, out of step with our new, down to earth aspirations.

Well, they’ve done it again, this time with the moribund kid’s home furnishings market.

The recent launch of this new Baby & Child concept in the buzzing Third Street Promenade on the Santa Monica waterfront has transformed the way we see the market.

Suddenly, the pastel shaded, cutesy home-grown happiness offered by Pottery Barn Kids and its contemporaries, seems trite and misplaced.

Restoration Hardware’s pale taupe alternative feels so much more emotional and founded on better design principles.

Like its older gallery format, the store encourages you to browse from gorgeous room to room, wishing desperately that your kids had grown up in spaces like these.

A strategically important store that, just like its parent brand, is sure to be hugely emulated.
